Don’t let winter damage your skin

January 10, 2017 By patkaspian

Beautiful woman
Bonjour mesdames!
Keeping you informed as we partner with you in your skincare needs, we hope our new quarterly newsletter format will provide you with tips, advances and salon offerings to keep you beautiful, the French way!
_____________________________________________

SOLUTIONS TO YOUR SKIN CARE CONCERNS

During the winter months, our skin is in need of some major TLC. From temperature changes, pollution, low humidity, pollen, and other environmental factors to lifestyle choices, winter can affect the health of your skin.

There are two types of dry skin many women experience –  Dryness (genetically inadequate oil production) and/or Dehydration (inadequate water retention).

Common causes of epidermal dehydration include lifestyle choices, such as smoking, medication or illness; a diet high in salt or stimulants, such as coffee; environmental factors, both heating and air conditioning; or sun damage, which can cause moisture loss.

All of these factors contribute to free-radical damage, contributing to loss of collagen and cell degeneration (read wrinkles and loss of tone and elasticity). Those with redness-prone or rosacea can often experience a higher rate of epidermal dehydration, because the heat present with their condition can encourage water evaporation.

Hormonal changes result in drier skin as we age (a boon to those who have had oily skin issues!). But to most women, visible aging can be accelerated if the skin is not nourished and kept well-hydrated.

Although drinking enough water is vitally important to hydrated skin, this alone cannot prevent dehydration. Even if we drink the right amount of water, if the skin’s barrier is impaired, the water is likely to be lost through TEWL (transepidermal water loss).

Also, if that weren’t enough, dry skin affects the absorption of your skincare products which is why gentle exfoliation, masks and treatments are SO important. This is where we come to the rescue… With our variety of French inspired treatments and products, we can help protect your skin from these environmental hazards and combat fine lines, wrinkles, and a dull, uneven skin tone especially during this critical winter season.

Since it is our commitment to stay on top of the latest innovations in skin care, we will always bring to you the best treatments and products… With A French Touch. We offer a customized, regenerating and relaxing experience with beautiful results.

SOTHYS Hydra 3Ha Hyaluronic Acid Facial

123_hydra_sothys

The Hydra 3Ha Ultimate Hydration Facial restores your skin’s capacity to re-hydrate. This luxury treatment meets the hydration needs of all skin types, in particular those with dehydrated or dry skin.

The customized facial works to exfoliate, rehydrate, regenerate, plump and rebalance the skin. The intensive treatment results in a 70% increased hydration after one week.

Hyaluronic acid is well-known as one of the most effective skin-hydrating ingredients. However, it is not always used to its potential when only one type is included in a formulation. SOTHYS combines a low-weight hyaluronic acid to allow hydration to penetrate deeper and more quickly in order to aid in improving elasticity. Additionally, a high-weight hyaluronic acid sits nearer to the surface of the skin and acts similarly to a dermal filler, helping improve surface hydration, and make fine lines and wrinkles appear less visible.

With the main active ingredient being multiple molecular weights of Hyaluronic acid, Hydra 3Ha provides deep hydration and immediately penetrates the skin without leaving heavy residue. Skin appears smoother and visibly younger after being enveloped in this creamy, nourishing line of skincare. After three treatments, results from SOTHYS clinical studies show 100% satisfaction with visibly youthful hydration.

Are you unknowingly contributing to your skin problems?

October 28, 2016 By patkaspian

Hands down… touching your face is a major NO-NO.

How often do you rest your chin on your hands, wipe hair away from your face, rub your eyes or nose? From turning door knobs, to handling money, to using railings along stairs, and pushing buttons…your hands come into contact with millions of germs. Some so frightening, they could star in their own horror film.

First off, a clean face. We have a great blog on how you should clean your face and you’d be surprised how many people do it incorrectly or use the wrong things to clean their face. Check out our step-by-step cleaning routine.

Also, here is a list of our Jan Marini, Sothys and Clarisonic favorites (which you can get in our salon and we have great specials going on!), proven to safely and effectively clean your face …

Our skin is a precious organ

Our skin is a precious organ that needs tender loving care especially as we get older. We all now to wear sunscreen, to moisturize, eat right and exercise but, there are little things that sometimes we forget about, like not touching or rubbing our face, which can be harmful in many ways.

We’ve heard from many board-certified dermatologists that bacteria, viruses and allergens transfer from fingertips onto the skin. And, if that’s not bad enough, repeatedly rubbing the skin can do some real damage. For example, rubbing the eyes, can actually create microscopic tears in the tissue (making the eye area look older faster), break the capillaries in the eyelids (causing little thread-like veins called telangiectasia) or break the capillaries under the eye (intensifying dark circles).

Also, cleaning your everyday tools (brushes, sponges, glasses, etc) and keeping your hands clean is paramount for healthy, happy skin. The following is a list of some things to be mindful of…

Why everyday objects need a good cleaning

Make-up brushes (cleaning)– By far the best cleaning solution we have found is Colorescience’s BRUSH CLEANER (it’s hard to find but, we have it in stock!!). The perfect blend of Hydrogen Peroxide and essential oils to condition the bristles, it guarantees the longest life on your quality Colorescience or other makeup brushes.

Foundation Sponges – We want a cleaned sponge at all times. Sponges can be re-used up to 3 months if properly cleaned. Now, the tricky part…cleaning deep into your sponge and getting fossilized make up out? There’s options like Blendercleanser or even a little Dawn dishwasher soap gets the oils out really well. It’s a trusted brand that not only cleans your dishes but is known for saving wildlife from oil spills.

Eyeglasses – We tend to forget the obvious. Sure we clean the lenses when we can see thru them but, because these touch your hands and any surface you set them on, they become a hazard to your skin as well! Give the frames a mild alcohol swab every so often to fight germy gunk.

Pillow cases – If you wake up with skin irritations or breakouts, your pillow case could be the culprit. When your pillowcase isn’t laundered or changed regularly, a build-up of dirt and oil from the environment as well as your skin and hair touching the pillow is transferred back to your skin. This can clog pores and cause blemishes.” Yikes! Wash your cases at least once a week and some experts even suggest switching out your cases every 4 days. Time to stock up on cases!

We suggest silk pillow cases. Silk pillowcases have been likened to anti-aging products and are often considered to improve your hair’s health while being hypoallergenic temperature regulators that also moisturize your face. And, silk feels so sexy against the skin doesn’t it?

Money – This bit of info made us a little qweezy but, when you think about it…it’s an eye opener that isn’t too surprising. Paper money can reportedly carry more germs than a household toilet. And bills are a hospitable environment for gross microbes: viruses and bacteria can live on most surfaces for about 48 hours, but paper money can reportedly transport a live flu virus for up to 17 days. It’s enough to make you switch to credit.

Cell phones — How often does your favorite gadget touch your face? A LOT! Often you lay it down on tables, desks, it bounces around in cars and purses and then, you put it right up to your face. Talk about breakout city! Wipe it down often and once a week, give it a good cleaning with alcohol, micro cloth or Q-Tips.

Other hazardous objects to be wary of… door knobs, computer key boards, remotes, seats and so much more. Basically, look around you. What do your hands touch and then, how often do you touch your face or eyes? Kinda scary when you think about it. I know that I absentmindedly do these things a lot and I often wonder why I have a blemish the next day. Well thanks to Patricia Kaspian’s insight and expertise in skincare…I’m more and more aware and I have a happy healthy face:-)

‘Til next time,

DuPree

What are the right steps for your morning skincare routine?

August 22, 2016 By patkaspian

Owner of A French Touch Salon, Patricia Kaspian, gives us those steps and the short version.

Those of us living or working on the central coast, we all know about the microclimates, from the dry, tough heat up in Paso Robles to the foggy, cool days in Morro Bay. And of course, add in the environmental hazards such as the recent fires and our skin is screaming for attention. What can we do for our skin, to start the day off right? I sat down with a French touch salon’s owner and skincare expert, Patricia Kaspian to find out what we should be doing for our morning skincare routine. I have to admit I’m not good when it comes to a routine with many steps; i mean who has that kind of time these days but then, the alternative is damaged and prematurely aging skin and who seriously wants to look old before their time?! Exactly! We’re on the same page.

Hi Patricia! I know you have a very busy schedule so let’s get to it…please educate us on what we need to do for our morning skincare routine.

Patricia: Your morning routine is to begin with a freshening cleanse so it responds well to the products that you’ll be using. These are the steps i highly recommend…

  1. A milk cleanser…it won’t strip the skin.
  2. Toner…a very important part of your routine! It removes every last bit of dirt or what the cleanse doesn’t get. It prepares your skin for better absorption of the products that will follow.
  3. Then your eyes…a very delicate area. Use a multi-action eye contour cream or serum that penetrates well into this delicate tissue to address concerns like fine lines, puffiness ir dark circles.
  4. This next step is critical and not many women know about it…add a professional vitamin c (over the counter versions fall sadly short of what a spa or medical line such as Jan Marini can provide in terms of results).a daily vitamin which is a free radical scavenger. For the whole day, it builds the skin’s defenses against any environmental aggressions.
  5. If you’re applying the Jan Marini skincare regimen, cleansing and vitamin c (above) are followed with an exfoliating glycolic acid bio-clear cream to stimulate cell turnover to keep your skin glowing.
  6. Customized serum and moisturizer is next to create that nourishing, moisturizing barrier which delivers more peptides & anti-oxidants. And, a good moisturizer will make the skin supple and less prone to wrinkles over time.
  7. Don’t forget about your neck cream!! We have Jan Marini’s Juveneck. Please don’t stop at the face. Take it downtown ladies and nourish that décolletage.
  8. Lastly, the finisher, is the sunscreen…whether it is Sothys SPF 30 (face & body), the anti-oxidant SPF 30 from Jan Marini or the all-in-one, make-up & SPF 50 mineral sunscreen by Colorescience…we have many powerful protective options that fit your taste and lifestyle. But remember…sunscreens last only 80-90 minutes a day so you must reapply! Even if you’re driving.

What do people need to know about most face washes? If there is soap in the wash, do they not tend to strip our skin?

Patricia: Yes, they do, compromising the delicate acid mantle of the skin.  I recommend using a purifying foam gel for oily skin, for dry or sensitive skins use a milk cleanser. I’d suggest using the bioglycolic cleanser which dissolves more dead cells and debris, getting rid of the flakiness and dryness so then, you’re left with skin primed and ready for better absorption.

Most people have a lifestyle, and patience, that can only handle a few steps in the morning. What steps would you say are a priority if someone just can’t or won’t take the necessary time in the morning to care for their skin?

Patricia: First, micellar waters are very big right now. They’ve been popular in Europe for years and we’re loving this easy peazy option because, they thoroughly clean and tone the skin and double as an eye makeup remover. Micellar water by Sothys is a great choice and perfect for all skin types. They can’t be beat for gym workouts and travel kits. Next, the vitamin c…it’s critical. It’s a step that you can’t afford to miss. Followed by your sunscreen. An anti-oxidant sunscreen which is actually hydrating. That could be the shortened version of taking care of and protecting your skin for the day. However, for those of you that have dry skin…you have to add a hydrating step with a serum or cream moisturizer.

Ok, people. Those are the steps for you to follow. Whether you do them all or can’t make the time and do the short version…starting your day off right by protecting and hydrating your skin will keep you looking fresh and youthful. You can come in the salon and find everything you need to follow these steps…one stop shop and Patricia would be more than happy to help you and answer any questions you might have. Patricia has high ratings and a following for a reason! Better yet, book online and get the full “French touch” experience! Au revoir!

April 19, 2016 By patkaspian

Would you add 2 steps to your skin care routine if it gets you better results? And, over 20% OFF…Always!

Managing a detailed skincare regimen is not always easy – as busy women, it is difficult sometimes to remember the routine, much less find the time to put it into action. But A French Touch Parisian Skincare Salon and Jan Marini Skin Research are here to help! With the Jan Marini Skin Care Management System, skincare is broken down into five simple, customized steps using the latest clinically validated technology.

1. Deep Cleanse

2. Rejuvenate

C-ESTA Face Serum is a non-comedogenic, powerful antioxidant formula that will show quick improvements in the skin’s surface by appearing smoother, firmer and tighter.  Your skin will look more even-toned and younger when using this product.

3. Resurface

Bioglycolic Bioclear Lotion offers remarkable anti-aging and skin resurfacing properties that help reduce fine lines, wrinkles, acne and rosacea.  Follicle size will reduce dramatically and a younger luminous skin will be revealed.

4. Hydrate

Transformation Face Cream will help rebuild and repair damaged skin cells by using Growth Factor beta-1, Tymosin beta-4 and peptides.  This time released system will leave the skin looking hydrated and healthy. Systems for Dry/Very Dry skin include Age Intervention Cream; its patented formula specifically targets changes in the appearance of skin resulting from hormonal changes and cumulative sun exposure.

5. Protect

Antioxidant Daily Face Protectant SPF 30 is one of the key components in the skin care management system.  It contains a PhytoMelanin plant extract that provides UV and antioxidant protection and an oil control system using microscopic sponge technology.  It is oil free and water resistant, leaving skin silky and velvety.

These products are just a sampling of those available for each step – one unique aspect of the Skin Care Management system is that it can be easily customized to accommodate any skin needs. Plus, additional Jan Marini products such as the Regeneration Booster and Retinol Plus are easy to incorporate into the system.
